A look at past, upcoming district happenings

DISTRICT HOLDS SECOND HOMECOMING FESTIVAL
On Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, the district will hold its second annual homecoming festival. Evening festivities on Sept. 30 will include an elementary movie night, dances at the middle and high school and an adult social at Our Lady of Peace church. The following morning, a 5K run/walk will take place at 8 a.m. Vendor booths, Bingo and the FAEF golf ball drop will all occur before a parade in downtown Freedom at 3 p.m.
The homecoming ceremony will take place at Bulldog Stadium at 5:30 p.m., after which the Bulldogs will take on the Riverside Panthers. The festival will conclude with a bonfire after the game.
FOOTBALL JERSEY 12 RETIREMENT
On Sept. 9, Freedom honored J.D. Haglan at the football game by retiring his jersey. In his time at Freedom, Haglan played quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1970-1973. Haglan was 18-3-1 in his run as the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs which included the Bulldogs’ undefeated season in 1973. After his graduation from Freedom, the highly-recruited Haglan went on to play at Clemson University, where he played defensive back as well as wide receiver.
YOUTH AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
On Sept. 19, a kickoff was held at CCBC to start the Beaver County Youth Ambassador program at Freedom. This program started at Freedom in 2016 and allows high school students to mentor younger kids and guide them through their school careers.
NATURALIST CLUB GRANT
Dr. Brian Wargo, FHS Naturalist Club adviser recently received a grant that the club was awarded last year. The club recently used the $3,000 grant to purchase 22 binoculars, two spotting scopes and equipment to attach their phones to the spotting scope.
CLASS RANK
Three GPAs are displayed on the permanent transcripts for students: 100 point unweighted (simple average of final grades for GPA), 100 point weighted (final grades for Honors, AP or CHS classes are multiplied by a either 1.05 or 1.1 before averaging for GPA), and a 4.0 scale unweighted. At the end of each school year, these GPAs are updated based on final grades.
