Forensics Competition 2010

Just like every year, Ms. Ross has spent the last month searching through her vast archive of plays, trying to find skits for her students to prepare them for the march through Penn State Beaver. This is a war of theatre that she always emerges victorious from. The annual Forensics competition at Penn State Beaver this year was held on Friday, March 12. Ms. Ross took a group of her top students from her Performing Arts classes as and as joined as well by Mrs. Giammaria with a few of her own. Freedom swept three of the four categories. In the other category we only gave one spot up to Beaver High School. This is the last year for the senior competitors; it will be the end of a whole career of competitions, dating all the way back from middle school for some. For others this is their first and last competition. The categories this year included: Dramatic duo, Dramatic interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, and Original oratory. Becca Fleming, Sami Jo Smith, Christian Beck and Meagen Finnerty took first place in their respective fields. Many of her students placed in a couple of categories. Ms. Ross also noticed a difference in her competitors this year from those of the past. This year she had more males place than females. She is proud of all of her students and was upset that they had to compete against one another. All of her students work as a community usually working as a whole in larger bigger productions that require the whole group. Even though the victory at Forensics is still fresh, Ms. Ross is already preparing her students for the next competition where they will be competing in a wider range of schools and talents. She has seen success there in the past and is eager to experience it again. Even though there are many seniors within this group that will be calling it quits after this year, there is an abundance of underclassmen and middle school talent that will keep Freedom competitive for years to come. Mrs. Giammaria had two freshmen place for a duo that she coached them through. Zack Hancharik, and Even Stiger took 5 th for their dramatic duo. This year, Ms. Ross shares a special bond with the seniors that she also sponsors, for like them, this will be her last year at FHS. It will be her last year teaching the Performing Arts class and coaching her students for competition. She has definitely left her mark at Freedom High School. With a long successful career in her field, Ms. Ross has brought out the talent in many young men and women and helped inspired some to make performing their career of passion in life.
