Get ready to pay: Most programs safe from budget ax, but student costs will rise

At the May 12 school board meeting, members discussed important issues and changes to be implemented to the district next year. The high school will be seeing a few major changes in different areas, including athletics and band. All these decisions are not completely finalized, and will be set into motion for the following school year in June. The one-to-one laptop program was approved for next year. The budget allocated approximately $100,000 for the laptops; most of that money will go to purchasing a new round of machines to replace the 5- or 6-year-old ones that are still around. Monetary distribution for the band is still to be discussed further, but as of the meeting it was determined that busing would not be provided for any marching band parades or festivals that are outside of the district. Breakfast and lunch costs will be increasing again by ten cents. High School students without free or reduced lunch will be paying $1.10 for breakfast and $2.15 for lunch. According to Superintendent Dr. Ron Sofo, it was determined at the May 12 board meeting that the pool will be drained after Project Graduation As a result, the summer swimming program will be eliminated. According to Athletic Director Mr. John Rosa, in the original budget cut proposal, both the varsity swimming and golf teams were to be completely eliminated. However, because of the cooperation of all varsity coaches, each sport was able to compromise a little bit of money to keep the two sports around. “Essentially all the coaches saved swimming and golf,” Mr. Rosa said. During the swim season, the district will pay for the team to practice, most likely at a local YMCA, said Dr. Sofo. The school will not be providing busing to and from practices. The same goes for the golf team, which will also have a coach and continue to exist, provided the athletes can transport themselves to and from practice. However, the school will provide busing to away meets for both sports. As for additions to the athletic department, head football coach Frank Hernandez was granted the request for new communications headsets for the team. Also, a washer and dryer was purchased for any of the high school teams to use to keep uniforms clean. Administration for the district will be moved around slightly; Mr. Rich Edder, the current principal at Big Knob Elementary, will be filling in the middle school principals position next year, as the current middle school principal Mr. Bob Gallagher will be retiring. The position as principal for Big Knob Elementary will be filled by Mrs. Debbie Baycura who will also continue to be Conway Elementary’s principal. According to Dr. Staub, the district’s plan is to eventually close Conway Elementary, move all fourth grade classes to the middle school, and consolidate all elementary students in one building.
