Overcoming Obstacles this Season

“Our expectation is to return to playoffs for the third year in a row,” Senior Brittany Mavrich said. The girls’ soccer team began their season with a win against South Side thanks to their hard work during the summer. According to Junior Sam McFarland, the girls began practice at the beginning of July. During the summer heat, the girls continued to start each practice with a mile run. The individual players also hope to keep the team closely bonded through fun and food. The team has been “having a family dinner… Everybody brings food, and we just chill every Sunday night,” Mavrich said. The girls hope this work pays off for them in wins this season. “Our goal is to make it to the second round of playoffs. Not to be a first round contender, ” Senior Emilee Handyside said. The team certainly has had a few obstacles to deal with this year. One major change from last year was the loss of their goalie, Mackenzie McGurgan. This made things difficult since a goalie is “a key component to any team,” Handyside said. Thankfully, the girls found a replacement: Senior Maddi Lewis. Not only is it Lewis’ first year in goal, it’s also her first year playing soccer. However, some players don’t expect any problems. “I don’t think it actually hinders us. Maddi’s doing a really good job in goal,” Mavrich said. “She really stepped up this year.”
