Record Breaking Season

As the weather heated up, so did the track team. They have been practicing and working hard to meet their goals for the season. Many athletes have been meeting their goals, beating personal bests, and some have even beaten the school records. This year, Seniors Dee Dee Adams and Wes Roberts both broke school records. Adams has broken the school records for the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter events, and Roberts beating the 3200 meter record. The key to success for Adams is very simple. “I work hard, and when I’m on the starting line it’s me against time,” Adams said. Runners, jumpers and throwers alike are determined to have a successful season. “All the throwers are working really hard and meeting goals,” Senior Matt VanDeCar said. “[The jumpers] hit and beat our personal records,” Senior Evan Mengel said. This is an accomplishment for any athlete, because it shows how through dedication and hard work, one can continue to improve. Athletes are working hard, improving and doing their best. “You can only make yourself [better] if you practice,” Sophomore Travis Hryckowian said. The boys team has had a great start to their season. They have won every section meet so far. There are many new track members, in addition to upperclassmen that are making the entire team strong. The girls have struggled to get enough girls to compete in certain events, leading to their only win against New Brighton. Because New Brighton was able to beat Our Lady of Sacred Heart (OLSH), the Freedom girls track team was able to make it to to WPIAL team semi-finals. Many of the athletes look forward to WPIALs and States. “I just want us, as a team, to be WPIAL Champions because track is a great team experience,” Senior Tyler Cousins said. One of the athletes that should be looking forward to states is Senior Emilee Handyside. Being very competitive in the 400 meter sprint as well as high jump, she is getting closer and closer to guaranteeing a spot at states. The team is looking for support, as many of the fans in the stands are only the students’ parents. Even though one might think a track meet could be mundane to watch, it isn’t. There is always something happening. Sprinting, jumping, pole vaulting, throwing or even watching the distance runners can be enjoyable, especially when you happen to know some of the competitors. “We want everyone to show up [to the meets],” Sophomore Zach Kugel said. In addition to watching events, there is also a concession stand, stocked with drinks and snacks for the spectators.
