School Board Meeting

On Oct. 2, the school board held the first of two meetings in the middle school library. The agenda for this meeting was primarily used to prepare for the most important topics for the second meeting of the month which was held on Oct. 9.

On this list of items that needed to be approved were as follows: sponsors for various school activities, Deb Williamson as the new play director, resignation of assistant wrestling coach, assistant baseball coach, teachers, finances and a cafeteria monitor for Conway Elementary.

Also on the agenda to be discussed by the board members were as follows: athletic parent code of conduct, WPIAL gymnastics, school policies, special education teachers and their programs, the gifted program, technology at Freedom, school trips and activities.

On Oct. 9, the school board held their second meeting of the month. At this meeting, the topics from the last meeting were further discussed. More discussions and approvals would soon follow.

Student of the Month and Middle School Hope Award winners were recognized, SAT and ACT scores,  finances, the progress of the elementary school and other topics were addressed at the meeting.

One of the main focuses of this meeting was, in fact, the building process  of the elementary school. It was stated that the project is only 23% completed when it should be at 25%. With this, changes had to be approved by the board.

Among these approved change orders were: a change in drain size and doors being added.

More possible change orders that may be reviewed in the future were as follows: windows, power wiring for the basketball hoops, sprinklers and the walls. These are all up for change and approval at future meetings.

At the most recent, a change order totaling $2,189 was approved by the board members. To date, $78,604 of change orders have been approved or have the potential to be approved. The current budget for the new school as only increased by 0.65% from the original.
