VOLLEYBALL - Wrapping up the competition: Freedom Volleyball finishes out the season

As the Freedom volleyball team wraps up their season, the girls play against some familiar opponents, as well as some new ones.

For the second time this season, Freedom played Lincoln Park on Sept. 30. The girls lost three out of three matches, and Lincoln Park took the game. When asked about her favorite memory, Sophomore co-captain Mackenzie Moldovan referred back to this game.

“We played Lincoln Park, (and) the student section was so hyped and we ended up winning after the fifth game. It was the best feeling, because we were determined to beat them,” Moldavan said.

At their game against Union, the girls lost by only one deciding match. This match went far into overtime, where the score was upwards of thirty-five.

“Get a picture of that score,” Coach Kristen Ames said. “You don’t see that too often.”

The girls played their game away against Sto-Rox on Oct. 9. Varsity played a close game of four to five, but in the end came out on top with the final winning match.

At the end of the season, the girls landed with a final record of three wins to eleven losses.

“All the team can do is prepare themselves for the upcoming seasons, with the hopes of placing higher in MAC’s,” Junior Michaela Muron said.

“I think what I’m going to miss the most is the bus rides to away games. This sport has been a huge part of my life over the past five years, so I don’t know what I’ll do without it, and I’m going to miss my coaches and team,” Senior Maura Evans said.

For Evans, Amanda Fisher and Hannah Fehir, senior night was a celebration for them. This game was played against Montour High School on Oct. 14.

“This is the toughest team in our section, so we’ll need a lot of support,” Evans said.

The girls landed the first score, but the games went to montour in both divisions. Both JV and Varsity lost to montour; JV 0-2 and Varsity 0-3.

The girls’ had their final game against Central Valley on Oct. 16. The girls lost all three of the varsity games, as well as both of the JV games.

Players of the volleyball team had advice to give their seniors; not only for volleyball, but for the rest of their life.

“They should do the best they (seniors) can in college and keep good attitudes on and off the court, even if they don’t play in college,” Moldovan said. “Attitudes affect a lot, as we found out from the season.”

Win or lose, underclassmen had many comments on the future season.

“Overall, I think that we had a good season,” Evans said. “We had some tough losses and great wins, but I think that made us more of a team.”

“We will do even better next season,” Junior Mia Vogel said. “The work we put in now will carry over.”

“Always try your best and work hard,” Evans said. “Set goals for yourself and never let anybody make you feel like you’re less than them.”

Even though the season has ended, the girls will continue to be a team off the court.
