Bioshock Infinite

Wow! Does Gigi DeWeese really play video games? Yes, I do. Typically I only have time to over the summer, but I made an exception over Easter break when I played Bioshock Infinite for PS3. I normally don’t enjoy a lot of games where killing is the only option you have, like many do, and that is probably why Bioshock Infinite was such a great game. There were a lot of similarities between this game and the former two (Bioshock 1 and 2), and yet there were a lot of differences as well. If you aren’t familiar with the Bioshock series, you should be. Though I don’t like the first two nearly as much as Bioshock Infinite, I have to admit they are pretty good games. The biggest reason I prefer Infinite is because the first two games consist of you living in an underwater world, and I felt very claustrophobic. This new world you play in, Colombia, is much more open. Another reason why I prefer this game to the first two is that not as many scary events occur, allowing me to not die of a heart attack more than once every five minutes. However, don’t worry if you like the thrill of things popping out of nowhere—it still happens in this game. You play the game as character Booker DeWitt. The only thing you know about Booker at the start of the game is that he has to “wipe away his debt” by retrieving a girl by the name of Elizabeth from Colombia. The best part about this game would have to be all of the theoretical and quantum physics that is involved. Basically, you are in a world that is literally in the sky. Somehow, a physician by the name of Rosalind Leutece was able to create this floating world with the assistance of the leader of Colombia, Zachary Comstock. Later, Rosalind is made aware that there are alternate universes. I won’t say much more, because I don’t want to ruin the game for anyone. There are all kinds of mechanisms and machinery that show how advanced this society is and yet, ironically, all of their moral values are that of the South during early American history. They are very proud of the founding fathers, viewing them as religious figures. On the other hand, Abraham Lincoln is seen as absolute evil. Everyone living here has great pride in America, even though years ago they left the Union to become a purer society. The character development throughout this game is absolutely amazing. The whole time you are at least a little bit confused as to why Booker isn’t able to remember anything other than that he has to get Elizabeth and bring her to New York. Nothing seems to make any sense until the game is completed, and even then, you need to pay attention to every small detail throughout the game to get the full effect. This game has a perfect balance of action and RPG elements. The only negative thing I can say about this game is that it isn’t long enough. Overall, it was a very well thought out storyline. If you liked Bioshock 1 and 2, you will definitely enjoy this game. I would definitely give it a 10 out of 10 with a very strong suggestion that you buy this game.
