Holding the basketball, sophomore Logan Bickerstaff prepares to pass the ball to his teammate during Senior Night for the Bulldogs against Summit Academy on Feb. 7.

After striving for a win, the boys basketball team closed their season with a record of 3-19. The team put in a lot of effort and had some great games this season. The team showed that they can work together, practice and win.

After losing to Burgettstown on Jan. 25 by a score of 56-37, they hoped to bounce back when they played Aliquippa on Jan. 26. The Bulldogs took a loss with a score of 82-40. Carter Huggins and Carter Slowwinski both led their team with nine points each.

Freedom had a few virtual learning days, which caused games to be rescheduled. The Bulldogs traveled to Seton LaSalle on Feb. 1. They fell short by a score of 83-45. Slowinski led the team with 15 points, and Huggins followed with 13 points. They got back in the gym with more practice to prepare for the upcoming games. After a hard loss the last time the boys played Aliquippa, they hosted them at home on Feb. 4 in hopes of a win. The game ended in a loss by a score of 70-34. Huggins led the team with 14 points.

The team struggled the past month, but in the end, the boys played for each other and enjoyed the last few games with their senior teammates.

“The thing I enjoy the most is coming to practice everyday. We start five seniors, so some players have been around for a while. So, getting to work with them in practice is probably what I enjoy the most,” head coach Jeffrey Griffith said.

Due to the canceled game against Summit Academy, it was rescheduled for Feb. 7. The Bulldogs were ahead in the first and second periods, but they ended up short when Summit Academy got ahead and won by a score of 82-56. Slowinski led the team with 21 points, Huggins scored 20 points and Joshua Yeck got 11.

Senior night was also held on Feb. 7. Both boys and girls basketball players and winter cheerleaders were announced with their biography with all of their achievements. The boys basketball team had five seniors this year.

The next day, the boys traveled to Avonworth. They ended up losing by a score of 88-41. Slowinski once again led the team with 11 points. This game was fought hard. The boys had two more games to play before they wrapped up their season.

On Feb. 11, the bulldogs hosted their rival team, New Brighton. The boys hoped for a win as they lost to the Lions earlier in the season. Parents, fans and students gathered in the bleachers to cheer on their team. The game was close throughout its duration, but the Bulldogs were up 20 points. The Bulldogs ended in a huge win by a score of 92-72. Huggins led the team to a victory with 32 points, Slowinski scored 26 and Max Bozza scored 18 points.

On Feb. 15, the Bulldogs traveled to Ambridge for their last game of the season. The Bulldogs ended up falling short to the Bridgers by a score of 80-53.

Although the Bulldogs fought hard this year, they will not move on to the playoffs. The Bulldogs ended with a record of 3-19.
