Breaking the Competition

Your complaints have been answered. We at the FHS Press have heard your cries for more track-related articles and we have delivered. With their triumph over New Brighton in the last meet, the girls’ track team secured their section title for the third year running. The boys’ team qualified for the first round of the playoffs, but didn’t quite make the cut. With a winning record of 11-0, the girls’ team is scheduled to compete in the WPIAL Championship meet on Thursday, May 7. Once there, they will have to beat South Park, Mohawk, and Shadyside Academy to earn the title of WPIAL Champions. “They [the track team] have done better than I expected this year,” comments Coach Steve Tinker (Tink). Tinker serves primarily as the distance coach for the team but he and Coach Ed Shephard (Shep) oversee all areas during the season . In Tink’s eyes, many of the athletes have exceeded expectations this season and are growing towards next year. Julia Kubica continues to develop into an excellent distant runner. Kubica has placed in every meet for the girls this season. Her success and underclassman Sarah Allego will greatly help the girls’ team go farther into the playoffs in years to come. Tink also believes that the long distance combo of Colin Allego, Matt McKinney, and Brock Adams will lead the boys track team well into the future. These underclassmen really stepped up their game this season. The girls’ dominant team was anchored by super senior Ashley Adams. Adams had torched many school and county records this year. She is currently the 2nd ranked high school girls’ shot-put thrower in the nation with a throw of 47” ½”. Adams has also dominated at discus holding the school and county record. Breanne Prinkey continues to impress at pole vault. This sophomore is currently pole vaulting 8’ 6”. With the strong showing from the underclassmen and seniors alike during this track season, the teams are continuing to be an asset for Freedom’s pride for many years to come.
