Colleges: How to choose the best fit for you

November has rolled around yet again. High school seniors across the country are touring university campuses and mailing transcripts to colleges in hopes of gaining admission. Before the grand decision of picking a final college is made, or even the decision of where to begin applying, numerous variables need to be taken into consideration. Theses choices can range from important matters, like how long it takes the average student to graduate, to more trivial matters, like the football team’s record. There is a slew of other variables that also plays a role in picking the right school. Some of the important deciding factors include distance from home, school size, location, cost, average financial aid, dorm size, eating facilities, number of students and major diversity. A vast majority of questions from the deciding factors can be answered when a college is toured during an open house or individual visit. Over the course of a college tour, those attending are able to view dorms and a classroom or two. They can also take a look around the library and talk to teachers and students currently teaching and enrolled at the college. By visiting a college, seniors have the ability to see where they may or may not be living in a year. If you have yet to begin the college search or are still slightly unsure, take a gander at collegeboard.org. By selecting “College Search” in the gray bar at the top, you’ll be directed to a detailed college search complete with multiple categories in order to deliver the best list of colleges tailored to your selected preferences.
