From director to producer

Despite submitting a formal resignation in May, Mr. Keith Kovalic (KK) has decided to once again be involved in the Freedom Drama Club’s musical production, which is “The Music Man.” There is a change to KK’s level of involvement, however. Rather than being a director, the position from which he resigned, KK will now be a producer of the Drama Club’s show. In previous years, KK took a role in managing almost every aspect of the production, including orchestra, vocals and auditions. This year, he will oversee the logistics, finances, overall vision and orchestra, but not be involved on a daily basis. This gives a chance for “new blood,” according to KK, to become involved in the system. The new director will be Miss Gemma Williamson, a Freedom alumna who was a minor lead in “The Music Man” the last time it was performed on Freedom’s stage in 2004. In addition to Williamson, several newer faces will find their way into helping with the show, according to KK. Mrs. Tammy James, a substitute teacher for the district, will be working with all individual vocals and will assist in ensemble rehearsal aside KK. Mrs. Kristen Milanovich, the multimedia teacher, is another new addition to the Drama Club staff. She will be in charge of technology and video use throughout the show. Mrs. Kaylee Haggerty, the art teacher, will be returning for her second year, assisting Mr. Thad Tokar with set design and creation. In addition to several new faces in the Drama Club staff, there will be several new FHS staff members cast in the show. According to KK, there will be two numbers featuring entirely male teachers, and one song featuring female teachers. “I want to see the participation and camaraderie that takes place when students actually see their teachers out of the fish bowl,” or out of their comfort zone, KK said.
