Each year, students and staff look forward to the annual Powder-puff football game. The student section excitedly roots for their grade, hoping for the win.
“I was excited to watch the underclassmen play, even though I thought the seniors would win. When the underclassmen won I was shocked. They all played so well, but Jordyn [Moehrle (9)] scored so many points, and I loved watching her play,” Emily Lawrence (10) said.
The underclassmen took on the seniors at a game of flag football. The goal of the game was to get touchdowns and capture the opponent’s flags.
The underclassmen intercepted a pass during the first quarter, scoring a touchdown. Then, the seniors made a comeback, scoring a touchdown and tying the score. In the second quarter, no points were scored by either team. The seniors took the lead, scoring a touchdown and a 2-point conversion in the third quarter. Following that play, Moehrle scored a touchdown, closing in on the seniors and ending the third quarter.
During the fourth quarter, Moehrle scored another touchdown as well as a 2-point conversion, letting the underclassmen take the lead. In the last minutes of the quarter, the seniors made a comeback, scoring a touchdown and tying the score, resulting in overtime. The seniors quickly took the lead, scoring a touchdown along with a 2-point conversion. The underclassmen made a quick return, scoring a touchdown and another 2-point conversion, tying the score once again, and sending the game into triple overtime.
Suspense was rising over who would win. While the crowd was cheering, the players were fighting to not go into the fourth overtime period. The fight continued until Moehrle scored the last touchdown of the game, securing the win for the underclassmen. The final score was 36-30, with the underclassmen taking the win.
“Getting to play with my friends for one last time was super fun, even though it was unfortunate we didn’t win, I’m still so glad I got to play.” Trinity Vojtko (12) said.
Although the seniors didn’t walk away with a win, they got to make new memories that will forever live with them. Both teams gave an impressive effort, making this year’s Powder-puff one of the most memorable ones yet. From an intense triple overtime to the cheering in the stands, this game captured the friendly rivalry between grades that makes this tradition so sacred.
“It was fun, and I had a really good time with my friends.I thought it was really fun how the underclassmen won. It was something I really enjoyed and I will be playing next year,” Moehrle said.
The underclassmen’s win not only made an exciting ending to the night, but also showed that teamwork and playing with friends are what really make the game. With players already looking forward to next year’s game, the tradition of the Powder-puff Football Game continues to bring memories and excitement to the school.
