The girls’ basketball team gathers in a huddle in a game against Southside on Dec. 28.

Practicing. Dribbling. Shooting. Running. Scoring. Playing Games. The girls’ basketball team is working on making it to playoffs.
Over Christmas break, the Lady Dawgs played in a Holiday Tournament, which took place on Dec. 27 and 28.
“The Christmas Tournament was a big boost for our team,” Head Coach John Kaercher said.
Throughout the tournament, the team played Western Beaver, resulting in a win with a score of 56-28. They also played South Side in the championship game 48-38, Freedom.
“All games provided tough defense and great team effort to secure the victories,” Kaercher said.
Senior Kayla Angeline will join Senior Joanne Barlamas and Junior Casey Spieler on the All-Tournament Team.
Junior Madi Daubenspeck was named the Tournament MVP. She gained the honor for scoring 26 points in their game during the Holiday Tournament. 18 of those 26 points Daubenspeck scored from behind the arc, commonly known as 3 pointers.
Following the Holiday Tournament there weren’t any games played until Jan. 9. This game started Gauntlet. Gauntlet is a series of section games, and the girls played a total of four section games in seven days. Freedom played Carlyton, Olsh, Sto-Rox and Avonworth.
“I think the basketball season is going great because the team is really bonding and getting along this year. So that’s making us play really well in the games. We hope to get far in our season,” Sophomore Courtney Susan said.
The girls bond by spending time together. According to Susan, the team has previously baked cookies and pizza together. The Lady Dawgs are friends with each other and hangout outside of the gymnasium.
When the team is focusing on their goal of playoffs, the girls are always preparing for upcoming games.
“We will either become contenders or pretenders,” Kaercher said to the team, with hopes of the team becoming contenders.
