Girl’s Soccer team focuses on fun and playoffs

As the school year once again begins here at Freedom, the girls’ soccer team is back in full swing. The team is once again coached by Mr. John Mohrbacher, who has been coaching high school soccer for 14 years. “The theme for the season is Highlights. Each game we focus on highlights, with the hope that this entire soccer season will be one of the highlights of the girls’ high school year,” Coach Mohrbacher said. After each soccer game, the team makes an effort to focus on the positive occurrences that took place, rather than getting stuck on the negative. “One of our highlights is usually working together and how well we communicate and use everyone on the team,” sophomore Brittany Mavrich said. The team, as of September 20, currently has a winning season, with a record of 3-1-1. “So far, I think we’re going to do pretty good. We’re all working hard and we’re all working as a team,” freshman Samantha McFarland said. Goals for the girls generally include having a winning season and having fun. Having fun is always one of the teams goals during the season, Mavrich said. Senior Lizz Reese hopes to “make it to play-offs, because we didn’t make it last year.” Making it to play-offs may prove to be a challenge, though, Reese said. The schools included in the section in which Freedom plays have seen a slight change. A previous rival, Beaver, is no longer included, but will be replaced by an equally difficult challenge, Sewickley Academy. Despite the threat of the challenging teams, “we have a lot of potential,” Reese said. Within the section the girls are in, their current record is 1-0-1. This differs from their overall record because not all of the schools the girls play during the regular season are considered to be in the section, which means those schools do not pose a threat for play-offs. Although the season is very early to determine, “If we do work and stay focused and determined… we will absolutely make it to play-offs,” Mavrich said.
