Golf team drives for success

When most people think of fall sports, football and soccer come to mind. But another sport swings into action this time of year: golf. The golf team is lead by coach Dirk Hartman, a PGA pro. He has been the coach at Freedom for three years. The golf team has had 10 matches so far, and their record is four and six. “Winning means nothing; it’s about having fun,” senior Jeremy Canonge said. Six matches are left in the golf season, along with MACs and WPIALs. For the rest of the season, “we’ll be playing a lot of our freshmen and a lot of our sophomores,” said coach Hartman. “We have a couple young kids who have talent…but I want them to have more experience,” coach Hartman said. “Our record doesn’t show it, but most people on our team are improving every day,” sophomore Nick Schwab said. Coach Hartman agreed that the skill on the golf team is increasing daily. Improvement is the main goal for the golf team this season. One of the most improved players is freshman Jessica Canonge, who shot a 43 at the golf team’s new home course, Shadow Lakes. “Everybody has potential to be the best; they just have to work for it,” Jeremy Canonge said. “I expected this season to be tough, but I hoped to see improvement out of my team and myself,” freshman Aaron McSorley said. Golf team members Jeremy Canonge, Nick Schwab, Brandon Bionda, Colin Macon, Andrew Christopher, and Jessica Canonge are going to WPIALs this year. Golf isn’t necessarily an easy sport. “Golfing can be the most fun sport at times, but it can be frustrating at times,” Jeremy Canonge said. And at other times, golf can be silly. One of Schwab’s favorite memories of this season is locking Macon in one of the lockers at Shadow Lakes. “It’s okay because I know they’re joking, but it’s frustrating when they leave and don’t come back,” Macon joked. Unlike other sports that people play in high school, golf is “something you can play for the rest of your life,” Schwab said. That’s what makes it worthwhile to many of the players.
