Goodbye Flip Flops and Sunshine, Hello Homework

Say goodbye to flip-flops and sunshine. Say goodbye to staying out andsleeping in. Say goodbye to summer- and hello to homework, classes and earlymorning alarms. School is back in session for the 2009-2010 school year and thehalls are bursting with new classes, new teachers and new students. Some arejoyous as they reunite with friends lost over the summer; others are lessexcited about the return to FHS. With all the back-to-school drama in thehalls, it would be easy to get lost in the mixed emotions. Freshmen have experienced their first few weeks in the high school.”At first I was a little intimidated ’cause I was a freshmen, and had noidea what to expect,” said freshman Emilee Baker. “Then as the daywent on, it got better.” Intimidation is the key word used by freshmen asthey look up to their older classmates who already know the ins and outs ofFreedom. Some upperclassmen even joke about the freshmen being nervous.”It’s kind of funny when the little kids scatter out of the way when olderkids walk through. They’ll get used to it, we all went through that kind ofthing,” stated junior Sami Smith. On the other end of the scale seniorslook ahead to the future, as this year marks the end of their high schooljourney. College applications are being mailed and schools are being visited. The pressure is being felt as the reality of graduation sets in. “Itdidn’t hit me at first, but the first day of school I realized how closecollege really was and how much I needed to finish and it definitely added somepressure,” senior Becca Flemming tells. Flemming, while filling outnumerous applications, wishes to attend Grove City College .She is also working with a full schedule which she says, “is kind ofterrible some days, but I know it will pay off in the end.” Each Freedomsenior is on their own path to the future and each freshman’s future has justbegun. Welcome to another year at Freedom Area HighSchool .
