Senior Carson Gilarno kicks off for Freedom against New Brighton during the game on Sept. 8.

As the new season starts up for the Freedom football team, they hold a record of 4-1 since their last game on Sept. 22.

The new season for the start of the 2017 regular season started on Aug. 25 when they took on the Hopewell Vikings. They would win that game 7-3 starting off their season 1-0. This would set the tone of their season and start the team off on a high note. The team is focused on one main goal, and that goal is to be the champions of their section.

Our current goal right now is to beat our opponent each and every week. We don’t look forward, we just take it one week at a time. But we ultimately want to win the section title,” senior Daniel White said.

Through practices and training for the season, the team has been preparing themselves since the end of Christmas break last year.

We can improve on everything. If we improve on the little things that other teams aren’t, we can be that much better than they are,” senior Kyle Borgman said.

Borgman also talked about about how the team is pulling together through all the grades to put the team on the path to being the champions of their section.

Our rough practices and hard work [helps us improve] and everyone on the team from JV to Varsity is putting in the work necessary to be section champions,” Borgman said.

One of the newest players to join the team that has made an impact is senior Carson Gilarno, who is also on the Freedom soccer team. Gilarno wanted to join the team when he heard Freedom was going to need a kicker for the 2017-2018 season. After showing the coach what he was capable of, he was placed as Freedom’s starting kicker.

“During conditioning, I thought I was going to dislike it, but as soon as I stepped on that field under the Friday night lights, that all changed for me,” Gilarno said, explaining what it was like coming into the season.

Since joining the team, Gilarno has already had a game-winning field goal. In the game on Sept. 15, there were only four seconds left on the clock in the fourth quarter as Gilarno would make the 22-yard field goal achieving a victory over Brentwood.

“As a team, since the season started, we wanted to improve on our success last year when we went 3-4 in the section and won a playoff game. That was a great stepping stone for the team especially after it being Coach Liberty’s first year here. Now that we know what to expect we knew we were capable of greater things this season,” White said.
