A view of Award Shows over the years

Many+steps+forward

The beginning of the new year means a lot of things for people. For some, it might mean starting a hardcore resolution. However, for the mass majority of celebrities, the beginning of the year means award shows. At these shows, they are recognized for their talents and hard work with the music they published or a movie or TV show that they played a part in. These award shows don’t just involve actors or actresses. They also involve editors, producers and more. Although people only seem to remember the vastly popular shows like the Oscars or the Golden Globes, there is a plethora of shows that take place in January and in February.

This year, the Golden Globes took place on Jan. 8. The Eddie Awards took place almost three weeks after the Golden Globes, which recognize the best television shows and the best featured movies. Specifically, the edits that are made to those showings to display bright and exciting effects. On Feb. 4, the Annie Awards began and gave recognition to the best animated films. Finally, the most recent award show was the Oscars, or the Academy Awards, which took place on Feb. 26.

These are just a handful of the 16 award shows that took place in the past two months. With each explanation of the award show always comes a specific date of when it all started. Those dates leave a somewhat major question in mind: How have these award shows changed overtime?

Not too long ago in 2008, the Golden Globes were not telecasted live for people at home to watch due to the Writers Guild of America strike. This caused writers and a few actors to try and picket the event, which caused a disruption in the event. There were no media restrictions during this event, so the news broadcasters were able to announce winners during a time after the award show. The incident was later resolved with a compromise.
In the past, the Eddie Awards typically only had one genre that they chose winners from; however, during the 2000s, there were two genres chosen to win awards: drama and comedy. From then on, the pattern of wins has stayed consistent between the animation and drama genres.

The Annie Awards started back in 1972 under the branch of the International Animated Film Association. These awards don’t focus solely on a film, but they instead focus on effects, music, writing and a large collection of other features added in films. After all, every film would be very different without the special effects, so the Annie Awards focus on praising the people who put hard work into making sure that those effects made it into the movie.
In the first two months of the year, there are 16 award shows; however, not all of them are as widely acknowledged as shows like the Oscars or the Golden Globes. Despite things not seeming to have changed, most of those award shows have changed or evolved in one way or another. The stage of the show changes, announcers change and even the building hosting the award show changes. Until movies and TV shows stop being made, award shows will continue to evolve over the years along with the technology and people involved with it.
