New Club at Freedom

Amidst the two school board meetings that took place Jan. 10 and Jan. 17, the school board made the decision to approve two new additions to the high school. The first addition was the approval of new gym teacher, Mr. Christopher Coennen. The second was the approval of an archery club for Freedom High School. Freedom already has a rifle club under the leader-ship of Mr. Bert Pickard. The archery club, on the other hand, was not official — only something that was spoken about. Pickard has always thought of having an archery club. “I’ve been wanting to do that for 10 years,” Pickard said. Along with carrying out the idea and working with Principal Mr. Timothy Dadich, Pickard also had to raise money for the club through outside sources. These funds went toward the equipment that is essential for the club. The sup-plies that needed purchasing were bows and Easton aluminum arrows per the National Archery in Schools Program. On Jan. 21 five teachers attended a training pro-gram at Central Valley High School. The teachers who became certified for archery instruction were Mr. Ed Shephard, Mr. Ed Majors, Mrs. Lisa Woods, Coennen and Pickard. Although the members of the club yet to congregate for a first meeting, ac-cording to Pickard, they may shoot from the pool balcony into an arrow net.
