MTV once again took a stab at connecting with today’s youth, and this time they may have struck gold. I’m talking about the new show on MTV, My Life as Liz . For any of you who have not seen or even heard of this show, I suggest you go turn on your television right now and wait until it comes on. The show itself is about a high school senior named Liz Lee, who is that girl that everybody knows: the not-so-popular, off-the-wall, rebellious against society yet extremely caring kind of person. The show follows Liz around as she lives a typical, yet semi-dramatized, high school life. She has participated in the school talent show against her rival/popular girl Cori, attended parties, went to prom, and even graduated. Throughout the season she has made new friends, gotten closer to old friends, and even harbored a crush. Like I said, this show is actually pretty close to portraying how high school can really be. Surprisingly for MTV however, My Life as Liz is in fact a scripted show, even though it is filmed in such a manner that a reality show would be filmed. The show, which debuted back in January, has garnered quite a fan following. “This is the best thing to happen to MTV in a long time,” said junior Chris Yeager, when asked what he thought about My Life as Liz . Since MTV has been filled with shows such as the Real World , which has nothing to do with today’s teenage audience; extremely fake shows such as NEXT or Parental Control; and other shows such as 16 and Pregnant and True Life , which feature teenagers, but in specific situations, it is nice to have a show that any high school student can relate to in some way. If a guideline for how to be a non-conforming high school student was ever written, it would probably be based off of the main character herself. So if you have never seen My Life as Liz before, and are looking for a new favorite show, I suggest looking this one up as soon as possible.
