School Board Convenes and Honors Students, Teachers

At its Mar. 14 meeting, the school board discussed new district building plans, honored students as well as teachers and experienced a performance by dancers from the Freedom Area Drama Club. After honoring H.O.P.E. Award winners Mrs. Maria Porter and Miss Katie Gigl, the board also recognized the Students of the Month for academic excellence. The board also discussed the possibilities of experiencing difficulties with the new building plans due to mines. A presentation from the architectural firm assured community and board members that continuing with the current plan to add another wing to the middle school will not result in any type of mine-related difficulties. Because the mines do not extend throughout the middle school, the new addition will be built on land that was not used to mine. Another issue of safety was discussed by the board with the future implementation of the Raptor security system, which compares school visitors against national lists of child predators or offenders.
