Senior Projects

With the start of the new school year comes the start of a whole new senior class. That means it is senior project time. Projects can range from academic, service, career, creative and technical; each having its own unique task. Some have already started their projects with their events taking place this fall.

Some of the most unique projects are those belonging to the creative category. Seniors Danika Probst and Shelbie Miller took the time this summer to write a short play that should be performed around early November. According to Danika, the play is being reviewed by Mrs. Heather Giammaria right now and is awaiting approval. Their creative project is something that the students can take a part in as well. Auditions will be held once the script is approved. “All [proceeds will] benefit the Trevor Project, which is an organization for young gay and lesbian teenagers, just for a place to talk.” Probst said. “We chose this because one of our favorite youtubers, Tyler Oakley, has endorsed it. Also because we like what it stands for.”

A group of the fall projects are considered under the career category, with two students participating in job shadowing. Lauren Dubovi, who is job shadowing in a veterinary field, plans to work with horses and learn different techniques about how to take care of them. Though Dubovi is still unsure of what to do once she graduates, she is hoping to go into some sort of field with animals. Another senior, Brad Hayworth, has started to spend time job shadowing our very own personal trainer, Vince Sinovic. “The biggest interest I have in this senior project is I love physical therapy. I like all the things the therapists do with the human body to fix the injuries. Physical therapy just pulls me in,” Hayworth said. Hayworth can be seen in Vince’s office on Mondays and Wednesdays for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year.

Don’t forget, there is also a service category. Both Erin Penson and Mercedes Olson are working towards helping the local community. Erin is helping out by cooking at fish fry dinners to benefit the veteran soldiers of our country. Meanwhile, Mercedes’s project is concerned with helping the animal shelter and raising money for the ASPCA, though she isn’t sure of how the money exactly will be raised yet. Both of their projects are centered on life interests that they hope to pursue in the future.

All of the students who are starting their projects this fall are putting a great deal of work into their senior projects. If you’re in the Class of 2014, you should be just as eager to get your project finished, but remember to get it done the right way. As an underclassman, I encourage the rest of you to get involved with the creative projects and to be supportive of the others putting hard work into theirs. Good luck to all of the seniors who will be working throughout the school year to complete amazing projects.
