Softball: Stalled season seems endless

The overcast sky and temperature of 55 degrees April 6 provided adequate conditions for the softball game against New Brighton. This may not sound like the ideal and picturesque setting for a spring softball game, but it was the best playing weather that the team had encountered in a week. Although the team is only two weeks into the season, seven games were cancelled due to poor field conditions brought on by the unpredictable weather. When a game gets cancelled, the team has to practice in the gym. “It’s irritating because we can’t do a lot in the gym; it’s boring. We love playing outside,” Sophomore Zoe Sayre said. In order for the games to be cancelled one of three things had to happen: lightning, poor field conditions, or excessive snow or rain. When lightning is an issue, the teams that are participating must stop warming up or playing for 30 minutes. Once the 30 minutes passes, the game can continue as long as lightning doesn’t strike again. If lightning did occur after the 30 minutes, the game would automatically be cancelled. Aside from the lightning and rain, the team also had to put up with snow early in the season. Unfortunately all the layers of clothes could not offer any protection from the effects of seven innings of perpetual snowfall.
