Swimming through adversity

This year the swim team has faced adversity even before the season began, by either having to cancel practice or reschedule meets. The team only had the chance to host one home meet, which was against Carlynton. It also had two scrimmages where the swimmers showed promise even without a place to train, making this one of the worst-best seasons they could have had. Both the girls’ and the boys’ teams have started out with a 0-1 record, but how much can you expect for a team that hasn’t had a whole week of practice? Due to the water pump and the pool temperature problems the team has had to put up with, the season has become even more challenging than it should be. There was even a period of time that the team didn’t practice for 18 days over Christmas vacation. They can’t practice at their own pool so they have to be bused to New Brighton’s Sunrise pool. Not practicing for such a long time can really hurt a team both mentally and physically. The chances of the team being at a level to compete with teams that are practicing every day or even two times a day are not in their favor. Even with the problems they have been facing they are still continuing to make their times decrease. Junior Matt McKinney said, “I feel the team itself is stronger than ever before, but not being able to practice is really taking its toll on us all.” The team’s chemistry is a lot different than past seasons, considering that they are all facing the same challenge of hardly having a chance to do something they love. Even without practice, the swimming season is still underway and needs the support of the student body.
