Too early for holiday spirit: Media’s effect on festiveness

We all know someone that starts getting ready for Christmas entirely too early. You know those people who start taking down the Halloween decorations, Christmas lights and nativity scenes right when Halloween is over.

Some people even forget about Thanksgiving because they are so worried about Christmas. Thanksgiving is this month, yet people are already preparing for next month’s holiday. At times, people can be more concerned with getting those decorations on sale and the biggest blow up yard decorations, rather than what these holidays actually mean.

It’s not all about the Black Friday deals and an early start on those much needed Christmas presents.

Nowadays, the first commercials and store ads that we see are for decorations for holidays that are still months away. How early is too early to start? But that isn’t the only issue.

For some reason, people find it more important to Instagram, Facebook and Tweet about the holidays. When did this become more important and popular than the actual holidays themselves?

All of the interest in social media has sparked easier access to new and creative things to do or even make for the holidays. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to jump onto the Pinterest bandwagon. With step-by-step instructions to make all of those cute and creative holiday crafts, people can get into the festive holiday spirit without even having to leave their house.

Social media is in no way a seasonal thing, which means people can start preparing for their favorite holidays well before they occur. Having all the supplies already in their possession, it may be seen as something that’s acceptable to do. It’s in no means acceptable to start decorating for a holiday three or more months in advance.

Decorating this early would be like celebrating your birthday three months before the actual date. Yes, these holidays are very important to people, but that does not mean that it’s necessary to be decorating so early. The best time to start decorating is a few weeks before the holiday. That way your decor will be seen plenty of times before the holidays, but not be up for excessively long period of time.

So, in the future, don’t be that person that everyone talks about, because you have all of your decorations up and running two holidays in advance.
