Finally, an age-old rivalry has been settled. In the quest to find the better party it was discovered that students are better than faculty… at softball. On 25 Oct. 2011, the students and faculty played it out on the softball field. Two teams of students took on the faculty squad in a head-to-head match for glory. The two games were full of hard-hitting moments. From Riley Schwertz’s home run in the first game, to Mr. KK’s fall on first base, there wasn’t a dull moment. Dr. Staub even had to stop playing during the first game due to injury. Thankfully, Mrs. Corris was able to fill his spot. Who came out on top? The students and faculty were matched in the first game, ending at 5-5. The faculty was dealt a defeat on the second game with a final score of student’s 8 points to faculty’s 3. The softball game was a fundraiser for the golf team, created by Mr. Fitzpatrick, but it wasn’t only a fundraiser. According to Mr. Fitzpatrick it was also “a way to increase school spirit.” Many of the students and faculty would agree with this. Weeks before the softball game, promotional videos were launched on DTV displaying the opinions of both teams. Phrases like “Bring it” and “You’re going to need a bigger bat” were exchanged. These videos may have helped the attendance. As the games progressed, the audience grew to engulf both sets of bleachers and begin filling the grass sur rounding the diamond. As for the success of the game, “I think everyone had a good time” said Mr. Fitzpatrick. Most agreed. Junior Maddi Lewis said she would like to participate in another student-faculty softball game in the future. Fortunately for Maddi and other students who would like to participate, Freedom may just see another of these games. “We’d love to do [another game] in the future,” Mr. Fitzpatrick said.
