“When I got my parking pass back, I was so excited,” Ms. Rosalyn Ionta said. After retiring last year from her full-time history position, she is back as a project-based learning (PBL) consultant. Ionta taught world cultures at FHS from 1993 to 2012. After her nine-year tenure, Ionta decided to retire. “I was consumed by my classes, my kids [and] my schedules,” she said. Ionta relates her new position as a project-based consultant with mentoring. “I’ve done what [teachers] have done; I know how hard it is,” Ionta said. As a consultant, Ionta helps teachers “find proven projects for the 21st century.” She assists teachers who seek her guidance in not only finding projects that employ sound PBL methods, but also by being available as a resource for maximizing time management with the block schedule. Because she needs to meet particular retirement requirements, Ionta consults two days a week. “I had to become like an independent contractor,” Ionta said. As a result of her new schedule, Ionta said she enjoys being able to go to the gym and travel more frequently. “Because I believe in [PBL], it’s so much fun for me,” Ionta said.
