Mrs. Haggerty adds some life to the art program

Along with getting new art students this year, the art room got something else. That something is a new art teacher and her name is Mrs. Kaylee Haggerty. Before coming to Freedom, Mrs. Haggerty worked at a school in Maryland that was five miles outside of Washington D.C. She most recently worked as a substitute at West Allegheny. After guiding students on art at Freedom for a couple of weeks, Mrs. Haggerty said that, “The kids are really nice.” She is also “excited to see the [student] art.” Along with the kids being welcoming and the excitement of seeing the art, Mrs. Haggerty also mentioned that the art room she will be teaching in has great artificial light along with a lot of work space. In high school it was her art teachers who got her excited about art. Mrs. Haggerty’s favorite types of art range from jewelry design to metal smithing as well as painting and drawing. When it comes to her personal preferences in art, Claude Monet is her favorite. Mrs. Haggerty also said that if she could work with any artist it would be Antonio Canova because “he is an awesome sculptor.” While at Freedom Mrs. Haggerty wants to get the community more involved with Freedom’s art program, make the art show a bigger deal, and work on the art curriculum. Being an art teacher, Mrs. Haggerty likes “Getting students excited about art” and “seeing them do better than they thought.” Along with seeing students getting excited about art, Mrs. Haggerty also would like to see her students “Go above and beyond,” in their artwork. To conclude, Mrs. Haggerty had advice for aspiring artists and what they need to do. “Be ready to put in hard work because art is teachable,” she said.
