Performing arts goes Christmas: Students perform ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’

On Dec. 8 one of Freedom High School’s Advanced Performing Art classes performed a play entitled “Christmas Carol/ It’s a Wonderful Life.” The play featured eight actors, ranging from freshmen to seniors. The play was based on learning the true meaning of Christmas by telling classic Christmas stories.

The play started with “Angels in Heaven”, played by Seniors Hannah Fehir and Ashley Malinak and Sophomore Sydney Stiger, hearing from another angle that the people on Earth need to realize the true meaning of Christmas.

The angels came down from heaven to a group of “tough” boys, who the angels felt needed Christmas spirit. They started by telling the “Christmas Carol” story. They go through the whole scenario of the present, past and future ghosts taking Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Senior Paul Zindren, through what his life has been, and how that’s going to make his future turn out.

Throughout the play, the actors went from being one character to another. After the “Christmas Carol” scene was over, the angels started another story,“It’s a Wonderful Life.” They started the scene with an angel named Franklin, played by Sophomore Megan Imhoff, telling Clarence, played by Stiger, all about George Bailey, played by Junior Megan Scott. Clarence was an angel with no wings and, to get his wings, he had to help Bailey.

“I actually saw both of the movies beforehand, and having to shorten the scenes, I thought we did an excellent job,” Fehir said. It showed all of George Bailey’s life, hardships and triumphs. They show him pulling his baby brother out of the icy water after a shovel sled accident. They also showed him meeting his future wife, Mary, at the local drug store. To help Bailey see his impact on Bedford Falls, Clarence showed him how life would be if he was never born.

The scene talked about the true gifts of Christmas are the people around you, not the riches you dream of.

After the “It’s a Wonderful Life” scene ended, the boys explained to the angels the true meaning of Christmas. They went on to talk about the birth of Jesus, and the reason they felt Christmas was founded. The angels then agreed with the boys saying “You’re right. That is the greatest Christmas story.” The whole cast ended by singing “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing.”
