Girls As well as the weather, the track team has really started to heat up their season in the past three weeks. Most of the team attended the 26 th annual Center Track and Field Classic two weeks ago where many of our talented athletes could be seen on the podiums receiving gold, silver, and bronze medals and also ribbons for fourth, fifth and sixth place. There were about 17 schools at the invitational, and our girls earned third place in total points among them, and a giant shiny trophy to boot. Top scorers for the girls included Breanne Prinkey, earning fourth place in 100 meter hurdles and second in pole vault, Julia Kubica taking first in the open 800 and Alexis Crossland placing third in the 100 meter dash. Also the four girls in the 4×8, sophomores Emilee Handyside and Sara Allego, freshman Dee Dee Adams, and senior Julia Kubica placed first by a landslide in their race. As for the throwers, sophomore Shya Moon placed fourth in shot put and junior Lauren Reese placed third in discus. These same girls, along with help from the rest of the team, helped clinch the important win against Beaver. On Tuesday, April 13 their first major section meet was held away at Beaver High School, with accompanying schools Wilkinsburg and Cornell also attending the meet. Beating Beaver was one of the major obstacles the team had to avoid in order to close the gap to their fourth consecutive section title. The scores were close with Beaver, but the girls fought to the end and pulled through with the win. They are now one step closer to their goal of claiming the section, and both the athletes and coaches hope that they will continue to rise to the occasion. Boys The boys team is also making a good run into the season, joining the girls with a win against Beaver and Wilkinsburg. Many of the stand out boys also made an impression at the Center invitational as the team took 5th out of the 17 schools there. This includes Zane Zeigler, who placed second in both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Also the boys in the 4×100, Joe Ermi, Seth Shidemantle, Ryan Baran and Shane Quinn collectively placed third, as well as the 4×400 that placed second. Quinn also placed third in high jump, while Nick Turner earned first in pole vault. This year they can see a section win on the horizon, and they plan to do everything in their power to secure it. Their efforts have been put to the test, and they have been rising to the occasion. Hopefully, if the track team is able to keep this positive frame of mind, their hard work will reward them with a section win.
