Once astudent reaches the high school level, most parents don’t feel the need to knowevery detail about what their children are doing at school, consideringstudents should be responsible enough on their own. This is what the reasonfaculty at FHS believe is the main cause of declining participation."Sometimes I would sit in my room through several sessions without asingle parent," says Mrs. Milanovich, a member on the committee organizingOpen House this year. Dr. Staub has thought of a plan in hopes of increasinginvolvement in this year’s Open House to fix this problem. Dr.Staub hopes to make open house similar to a conference day, although all of thedetails have not been worked out yet. Open House is scheduled for October 12,the first in-service day. This conference day will consist of scheduledparent/teacher meetings. Teachers’ schedules will be staggered throughout theday, where they will meet with a parent every 10 or 15 minutes. The ideais to make this conference an all-day event. Some parents will be workingduring the day, so appointments with teachers can be made in the evening. Theschool board plans on using this type of Open House for this year only. If theturn-out is a great deal better than past years, the conference day may stay inaction for next year. This newplan for open house is a great way for parents to speak one-on-one to theirchild’s teachers and address concerns. A major change for sure, but hopes arehigh about the outcome of Open House this year.
