As the Bulldog team kicks off their season, they are starting with a losing record of 6-13. However, individually the team has brought home multiple wins. Junior Tanner Millward had a total of four wins at the Chartiers Houston Tournament on Dec. 10 and 11. Out of his four wins, three of them were pins, and the other was a major. He had a sixth place finish as well.

“I feel I did pretty good, I think 145 for the start of the season is a little bit heavy but I think I handled myself well. After Christmas I plan on going down to 138, but overall I think I had a good weekend,” Millward said.

Millward has gained a total of 30 wins from his last few years wrestling on the varsity team.

Millward wasn’t the only one that was able to gain some pins. Many other wrestlers on the team were able to win some of their matches as well at the Chartiers Houston tournament on Dec. 10 and 11. Sophomore Ryan Kredel and junior Trenton McCray each had a pin as well.

“I felt like I had a great match. My conditioning was pretty good and I would expect to have a season with a lot less injuries hopefully,” Trenton McCray said.

On Dec. 15 the team traveled to Carlynton to take on the Cougars and the South Side Rams. The team managed to bring back two wins. They won 27-24 against both Carlynton and South Side. Both Millward and sophomore Cody Patterson had pins at the match.

This year the team consists of 12 wrestlers. Seniors Xavier Dwyer and Colin Walton. Juniors Matthew Schultheis, Trenton McCray and Millward. Sophomores Ryan Kredel, James Couch, Patterson and freshmen Nathan Hronas, Dalton Landon, Gavyn McCray and Jason Shiring.

The team is being led by new head coach Zeke Stroupe, who is also a Freedom graduate. The team has a lot more coming for them later in the season. They are expected to see teams such as South Side, Carlynton, New Castle, Avonworth, Beaver, Fort Cherry, Mars, Hopewell and much more competition at their tournaments and regional matches to come.

Their next tournament will be held on Jan. 8 at 8:00 a.m. where they will take on the Central Dauphin Rams. The dual will consist of five teams including Bethlehem Freedom, Big Spring, Central Dauphin, Freedom and Northern York.
