Bad Prom Decisions

As the year comes to a close, the feelings of completion and excitement are practically tangible within FHS and its halls. Seniors are preparing to embark new thoughts and ideas on the world, underclassmen are joyous for making it through the year alive and everyone is ready to move forward. For upperclassmen, in particular, the warm weather sparks thoughts of prom and all its high school glory. Everyone who attends this anticipated staple wants to not only enjoy themselves, but make lasting memories as well. After the all-night event, some attendees will have the opportunity to continue the fun by partying until they drop and getting so drunk they can’t even remember what happened. Just because many will have the opportunity, though, doesn’t mean students should. There should be a distinction between hanging out with friends afterward and making decisions that could negatively–and permanently–affect your future. Drinking at a party or having sex after prom should absolutely be the individual’s prerogative. The root of these activities is not wrong, but if handled immaturely, they could both have disastrous consequences. Getting into a drunk driving accident and taking one’s own life or someone else’s will undoubtedly alter the future for those involved. In addition, getting pregnant while in high school due to unprotected sex is not something that should be taken lightly. Successfully completing secondary education is difficult enough without worrying about a child or an unwanted addition to a personal record. The decisions each of you makes now have the potential to derail your future, forever. Drinking, having sex and other activities should be determined per individual’s own feelings. Just make sure that you realize the consequences of your actions if handled immaturely, not only for prom, but for the future, as well.
