BASEBALL – Optimistic underclassmen: Despite missing playoffs, players optimistic about team’s future

With the season finally coming to an end, the team is reflecting on their performance on the field and saying goodbye to the senior members.
Throughout the entire season, many of the games resulted in losses. The team managed to pull out wins for two games, which made the hope of playoffs unrealistic.
“It doesn’t feel good [not making playoffs]. We had a good enough team to be there. We just didn’t end up where we wanted to be,” Senior Christian Edder said.
“[I’m] disappointed we didn’t make [playoffs], but the season was fun while it lasted,” Senior Alex Kastroll said.
This season, senior night was held on the day of the final home game on Thursday, May 1 against South Side. Seniors were acknowledged and honored prior to the beginning of the game. Freedom ended up taking another loss with this game, the final score being 9-4.
With the season at its end, the baseball team will be saying farewell to six members from their roster: Seniors Edder, Matt Feits, Kastroll, Aaron McSorley, Bobby Thompson and Mark Zurick.
“I’m definitely sad that [high school baseball] is over, and I’ll miss it a lot in college,” Feits said.
“It’s tough because this was the only season I played [for the high school] and enjoyed it. I’m disappointed I didn’t play before,” Kastroll said. “[Next season] I believe they’ll be a lot better. The guys are more experienced now and have a lot of potential.”
Though the team will be losing multiple athletes after graduation, there are quite a few juniors and other underclassmen left to step up to the plate next season, both figuratively and literally.
“[The team] will have to work a lot in the off-season if they want to have a good season next year,” Feits said.
Underclassmen are optimistic for the upcoming season.
“A lot of juniors are going to be pretty decent, and our team’s going to be better,” Sophomore RJ Schlegel said. “I feel like we’re going to step up next year and have a pretty decent season.”
As for the seniors, Schlegel said, “we’re going to miss them.”
The baseball team played their final game on Monday, May 5 at New Brighton, the final score being 12-2.
