Behind the scenes at Print Media Workshop

Do you ever wonder who the crazy kids are handing you little pink slips stating “Buy your yearbook today?” What about the people that creep up behind you and snap a few photos then dart through the hallway back to Mr. Fitzpatrick’s room? Well Freedom High School, we are the fabulous staff of Print Media Workshop. PMW, for short, is the print journalism class offered here at FHS that covers our school newspaper along with the yearbook. No matter what the situation may be, we are always attempting to think out of the box while trying to make week-to-week deadlines. Why are we so dedicated? There truly is nothing like seeing our names in print at the end of each month when our latest issue of FHSP debuts. We work our little tails off from the day after our paper is distributed up until we submit our final copy to the printer. To create our newspaper we must complete a series of steps. First we publish our articles onto Google Drive and allow our fellow staff members to edit them. Once that is completed, it is on to our section editors who are in charge of either features, sports or news stories. Once that is done, it’s onto the Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor, Assistant Managing Editor and Copy Editor to make sure there are no blemishes in the articles. Finally, the Section Editors, AKA the ones in charge of all things features-, news- or sports-related, create the newspaper digitally on Microsoft Publisher. By this point, we are roughly into the third week of the month. After the final editors make their revisions, it’s off to Lyle Printing! Within the next few days, we have copies of our paper hot off the press for you all to enjoy. We staff members must dedicate at least an hour of our time each week after school to Print Media. Whether that be staying after school and editing articles, working on our assigned yearbook pages or attending a sporting event and taking photos. This class really does show that hard work pays off in the end. Usually on distribution day, we have a party complete with chicken-flavored rice, buffalo chicken dip and the delicious unknown concoction Jon Bittner creates. So to all of you that feel we throw this together at the very end, that couldn’t be farther than the truth.
