Boys’ Basketball

Once again, the FHS Basketball season is over. With hard work and dedication, the boy’s basket ball team managed to finish their season with a win. Next year, the team will start with a fresh slate and hopefully improve their record. With a new season, the team may even see a few upperclassmen try their hand at basketball, along with the upcoming freshmen. The addition of players might prove profitable for the team, for it fell short of this year’s goals. “It was sad we couldn’t make it to playoffs,” Junior T.J. DiCierio said, “but we always have next year to try again.” Next year’s outlook is positive according to the current players. They will be at an advantage thanks to the continued instruction of Head Coach Tim Morgan. “[In the past few years] we’ve had three different coaches,” Sophomore Matt Feits said. With the same coach, the team hopes that less time will be lost learning about the improvements needed. Unfortunately, not everyone will benefit from this. For five of the 13 people on the team, this will be the end of their high school basketball careers; Connor Yarzebinski, Micheal Gilbert, Nick Talerico, Garrett Mohrbacher and Kyeem Moon are in their final year. Not having the seniors to rely on next year means this year’s juniors will have to step up and lead the team. “[Nick Schwab and DiCierio] are good guys that know basketball,” Mohrbacher said. The seniors had helpful advice for the future team. For example, practicing “in the off-season” was Moon’s suggestion. It’s also important for future players for Freedom to have fun, because that’s what the game should be about. After years of playing basketball, Talerico says “playing in general and having fun” is what he’ll actually miss most.
