Clubs Spring into Action

Many clubs, including Science Club, National Honors Society and World Affairs Club, have been busy preparing for upcoming activities in the final months of the school year. However, one unknown club, the Future Business Leaders of America, has already been active. The Future Business Leaders of America prepares approximately 250,000 students across the nation for careers in business and business-related fields. Freedom students Deanna Edwards, Tippin Harkins, Tori Orison and Katlyn Stark are involved in this association. “It’s not just a test,” Harkins, FBLA Regional Class President, said. “It prepares you for the real world and teaches you a lot about what’s expected from you when you go into the workforce.” This past December, Harkins and Orison qualified and attended a banquet for the regional competition for their particular category, Desktop Publishing. As for the Science Club, members will be participating in the Envirothon and competing against various Beaver County at Brady’s Run May 2. The Envirothon is a “fun, academic event,” according to Ms. Giebel, Science Club Sponsor, said. “Students are exposed to scientists and experts in the field of environmental science and ecology who will coach and guide their learning experience.” It is a one-day event where students in groups of five will have their knowledge tested in natural resource and environmental sciences, including: Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soil and Land Use, Wildlife and Current Environmental issues. “I think the kids going this year have a really good chance of placing. There are some experienced upperclassmen returning to the competition as well as some high-achieving freshmen,” Ms. Giebel said. Next up, all 32 members of the National Honor Society will be reaching out to the community May 12 by taking a part in the Relay for Life at Ambridge High School. The Relay for Life is a 24-hour walk that promotes funding for patients with cancer. NHS members will be taking two-hour walking shifts all throughout the duration of the walk. If anyone is interested in donating, see an NHS member for more details. Not only will NHS be participating in this cancer walk for charity, but will also be beautifying the outside of the school again by landscaping in preparation for graduation. “We look for well-rounded students who meet our four pillars: scholarship, leadership, character and service… We will be looking for dedicated students who can help our organization grow,” Ms. McCune, NHS sponsor, said. Lastly, Ms. Ionta, World Affairs advisor, said that the World Affairs Club hopes to “open the Freedom cultural lens” by doing a project that involves a school in Taiwan. The club would like to think that a student exchange program could be part of Freedom’s curriculum in the future. “We are presently trying to establish technology-based communication with a school in Taiwan, whereby our student would have direct Skype contact and could forge a ‘sister school’ project to build enhanced cultural communications,” Ms. Ionta, said. The club is also creating a Kony project, where they intend to sell T-shirts April 20. For this to happen, they will be working alongside the art department, multimedia classes and Save the Children foundation to send direct T-shirt donations to Uganda.
