Crowning Freedom Royalty

Years of tradition dictate Freedom’s annual Homecoming festivities, and the 2008 celebration was conducted with all of the expected pomp and circumstance. This year’s court included: Jenn Cantella, escorted by Josh Cantella; Maggie Dietrich, escorted by Kyle Lutz; Courtney Frain, escorted by Steve McFee; Chelsea Kaclik, escorted by Cody Morgan; Amy Lowe, escorted by Nick Pertile; Olivia Miller, escorted by Steve Plate; Stephanie Reese, escorted by Jesse Scheller; Kaitlyn Schaub, escorted by Jake Simpson; Nicole Ward, escorted by Zach Stroupe; and Cassie Winterbottom, escorted by Adam Wakefield. The procession began with a lap around the track in classic cars while the band performed their pre-game routine. Then, the couples proceeded down a tunnel of flags, reminiscent of medieval celebrations, while their biographies were read and the band serenaded the audience with the classic tune, “I Melt With You.” All of the candidates were received with thunderous applause. The court was trailed by see returning royalty Kayla Clear and Lexie Challis, standing in for John Challis, as well as pages Jake Pail and Alexsia Barlamas. A final drumroll announced the passing of crowns to the 2008 Homecoming King and Queen: Steve McFee and Nicole Ward. Homecoming also included the return of the Thursday evening bonfire as Kayla Coll’s senior project. The night included a DJ, dancing, and plenty of good food. Freedom students came out in droves to celebrate the 2008 Homecoming Court and to enjoy an evening of entertainment and fellowship. Friday’s pep rally and formal celebration marked the end of Spirit Week for the Freedom students. During the week leading up to Homecoming, students participated in Crazy Day, Twin Day, Formal Day, Costume Day, and Red & White Day. Participation levels were at their highest remembered levels in Freedom history. The winners of the Spirit Week contest were announced at the pep rally, along with the members of the Court. Devin Sauers was announced as the individual winner, collecting 263 tickets. The senior class won the overall contest, earning them a movie period in near future. After an introduction by the band and the announcement of the Spirit Week victors, the 2008 Homecoming Court was announced in preparation for the night’s ceremonies. With all of the festivities, the 2008 Freedom Homecoming was a night to remember.
