Cutting your hair to show you care

Think back to when you were younger, when your mother would braid your hair, or when your giant older cousin would throw you into a headlock and mess with your hair when you were six. Fast forward to now and think of when you schedule appointments to get your hair done for prom or a quick trim before the sports season starts or when you get recognized at the mall for having hair like Justin Bieber. Unfortunately, some children, teens, and adults never get to experience having their hair done because of treatments they must undergo to treat diseases they have. Luckily there are foundations that take hair and make it into wigs and give them to children, teens, and women who do not have any hair due to serious illness. The two most recognized foundations are Locks of Love and Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths. Locks of Love is centered on individuals under the age of 21 who have lost their hair through some type of treatment or disease. These wigs can cost anywhere between $3,000 to $6,000. Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths is more for the women who are having difficulties with hair loss due to treatment such as chemotherapy. The only difference between the two organizations is that Pantene’s wigs are free like treat bags at a party, and Locks of Love’s wigs are along the lines of buying something that costs between three and six grand. Sophomore Emilee Baker recently donated her hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program. “I wanted to cut it because it was getting annoying,” she said. So she decided to “chop it off and donate it.” The requirements for donating can be found on both of their sites. The main guidelines are the hair has to be either eight or ten inches from where the ponytail or braid is made. Make sure if you decide to donate that there is no product residing in your hair. If reading that Locks of Love makes the receiver of the wig pay such a high amount doesn’t convince you to donate there, remember that they are both great causes, and they both target different age groups. Locks of Love helps children and Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths helps women. Think of the children who are being made fun of on their first day of kindergarten because they have no hair. Students and teachers of Freedom High School, please think next time you go to get your hair cut think about the children and women who do not have hair to pull into a pony or get frustrated at in the morning or to play with while in class. Ask your hair stylist to cut it so it is able to be donated to one of the foundations!
