Daring the dress code: The dress code is just a suggestion, right?

Every school has a dress code as well as every school has kids who violate the dress code. Recently students have been wearing shirts that show their entire stomach, pants that sag to mid-thighs and shorts too short that show people what they don’t wish to see. So one question, why are people trying to bend and break the rule of dress code?

The dress code was written for a reason, so students don’t wear distracting or revealing clothing to school. Breaking the dress code is a problem for both boys and girls, boys who wear their pants below their waistline or shirts with the sides cut out are also breaking the dress code.

“I think the boys are as guilty as the girls, but the girl’s are much easier to catch than the boys.” Mrs. Maria Porter said.

“When I was a freshman, it was the seniors breaking the dress code, but now it’s switched,” Senior Riley Barnes said, “Now it’s mainly the underclassmen.”

“I think whatever codes we have should be enforced. If it’s not enforced or if administration or whoever is in charge decides something is not to be enforced, it should be eliminated,”, Mrs. Carole Hartman said, “Uniforms would be nice because you don’t have to think too hard about what you’re going to wear the next day. It would be simple, wear this uniform, then have special days where you wear street clothes , casual wear. A lot of schools have them, I have a son who goes to a college where they wear them, and it’s not that big of a deal.”

“The dress code right now,” Barnes said, “is reasonable. People just have to follow it, and not be ignorant. I think the freshman are breaking and bending the rules more because they aren’t used to the dress code, and may think they are able to get away with wearing inappropriate clothing, they just have to learn they can’t do that.”

There are many options to what our school could do to stop students from breaking the dress code. One option is having uniforms, everyone would wear the same thing. Boys would have one outfit, could be such as khakis, a polo/nice shirt, a tie and a jacket. For girls, they could have a skirt, tights/pantyhose, a blouse, and a jacket.

If the school decided to have uniforms, people wouldn’t be looked down upon, or praised for their clothing. the uniforms would keep everything simple, people would know what to wear for the next day and not be scurrying around in the morning wondering what happened to that brand new pair of jeans they just bought. Uniforms can be inexpensive, and would help the student body.
