Football: Injuries to Victories

After a hard year’s work of being the head coach, it paid off when Hernandez got his first win on Sept. 16, 2011. Traveling to an away territory of the Mohawk Warriors, the Bulldogs were favored to win.The team pulled through with a victory of 35 to 20. With a couple of tough losses to Ellwood City and Beaver, the Bulldogs found a way to bounce back twice as hard against Mohawk. “The coaching staff did a great job scouting and calling plays, and nobody quit or took a play off,” Zeke Stroupe, a senior captain, said. In preparation for the season, the football team practiced year-round; from two-a-days in the summer, to lifting in the winter. “[We]did a lot of running, lifting and team bonding because the freshman needed to fit in with us,” Kyeem Moon, a senior captain, said. A couple of players were still injured from last season; others were injured in the current season. Some that were injured are Kahlil Caracter, Adam Shawger, Forrest Petcovic, Connor Yarzebinski, Jared Hogue and Jonathan Meinert. Shawger and Petcovic overcame their injuries just in time for the game versus Mohawk. Hogue played through the game with a cast on his wrist. Yarzebinski came out of his full leg cast and played against Laurel. Caracter received surgery for a torn ACL and is probably out for the season along with Meinert, who has a severe head concussion. The team is led by multiple captains this year. Each game a select few of them get to go out for the coin toss. The captains, this year, include: Zeke Stroupe, Kyeem Moon, Jonathan Fiscus, Branden Heckman, Sam Beckey, and Forrest Petcovic.
