Freedom Students Go Global with Holiday Greetings

Two years ago, the term “project” at Freedom High School meant making a poster, writing a report, or possibly doing a power point presentation. Now, in 2009, “project” means making movies, creating songs, and getting involved in service and cultural projects…in other countries. Ms. Ionta and members of the World Affairs Club have begun a new style of learning through the website I-Earn USA . Using this technology, teachers have the ability to blog and talk with teachers from across the globe, as well as have access to over 200 different project ideas. But these 200 projects are a far cry from the traditional definition of a project. Instead, students can take part in activities such as raising the $7,500 needed to build a water well in poverty-stricken Darfur. Earlier this year, the World Affairs Club students took part in a greeting card exchange with students from Iraq, Russia, and the Ukraine. They chose to send cards from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years to these other students to help them learn about American holidays. Recently, the club has received packages from the students in Iraq and the Ukraine and is anxiously awaiting their package from Russia Once all of the packages have been received, the cards will be mounted into a display for FHS by Lisa Polaski and other members of World Affairs in order to generate interest in the venture. There is also talk of beginning a culture exchange between the four schools through the usage of Freedom’s technology. Students have expressed interest in learning more about the houses, music, family, and traditions of other countries through direct interaction with other students. Project sponsor, Ionta, comments, “I like it because it takes my classroom to the real world.” Ionta believes the website to be an invaluable tool to Freedom’s continued growth and development, because it allows the students to get involved in global service projects. She also commented that there are projects that involve every content area, such as theater, art, and history, so that it would be feasible for many of the teachers at Freedom to utilize the benefits of this website. “Students don’t have to be a part of all of the projects,” said Ionta. “They can pick and choose based upon their interest and schedules.” After the success of the greeting card exchange, the World Affairs Club is eager to begin more projects in the near future and to involve other aspects of the education process.
