Girls’ soccer has a winning season: Playoff loss doesn’t diminish spirit

As the girls soccer team wrapped up their regular season, there was one thing on each of the girls‘ minds: playoffs. The team finished with a record of 9-7-2, and though they did not win the section, they strive to obtain even more success in the upcoming post-season. Despite a few disappointing losses, the team proved very satisfied with the overall outcome. Multiple players agreed that they im-proved greatly from last year. ―It seems like this year we had more determination, knowing that we lost a lot of girls from previous years,‖ said junior goalie Mackenzie McGurgan. ―A lot of our fresh-man and underclassmen stepped up.‖ Though various games were memora-ble for each teammate individually, games against Neshannock stood out to the team as a whole. The girls did lose one game to them, but tied them in overtime in a separate game. ― Playing Neshannock was most chal-lenging so far because they are a skilled team – but, that is when we play our best game,‖ said senior captain Lauren Reese. ―Although [the white-out game] was a tough loss, the way we played and the sup-port we had from the student body just fu-eled our determination to make it to play-offs.‖ One major factor that contributed to the success of this season was the team‘s overall unity; they acted as a team both on and off the field. They grew not only as a soccer team but as friends as well. ―The girls kept me going through the hard times,‖ said sophomore Brittany Mavrich. ― Everyone always had a smile on and knew that we had each other‘s backs.‖ Senior Lizz Reese agrees. ―This team is closer than any of the other teams I’ve played on; even after the season is over we’ll all still be friends.‖ The girls actually ventured to Geneva‘s ropes course earlier in the season, allowing them to really come together outside of the soccer field. Between Coach John Morbacher‘s motivational raps, celebrations after games, and the excessive laughter each and every practice, this season will be difficult to over-shadow. The girls‘ team did continue to play-offs to play Shady Side, losing 4-1. Despite this loss, the team is proud of their perform-ance and is looking forward to more successful seasons in the future.
