Golf: Celebrate good times

Novices and veterans of the fall sports teams have turned in their jerseys and honored their seniors with Senior Night, but they still have one event hanging in their midst before officially disbanding for the year. While the last game or meet is the final time that everyone partakes in the respected sport as a whole, unified team, the banquet that is held truly signifies the end of the season together. Freshman Casey Spieler, who was introduced to sports banquets this year, was most excited “to be together again” with her teammates on the Girls’ Soccer Team. Junior Tyler Cousins, who is part of the football team, looks forward to the football banquet. “I like being with my family and friends [at the banquet],” Cousins said. These banquets are usually held in the school’s cafeteria or a banquet hall. The golf team decided to celebrate their season at Junior Colin Macon’s house. “My mom volunteered our house,” Macon said. What actually happens at the ceremony probably runs along the same lines. The same events will take place either in the nostalgia-filled and balloon-adorned school cafeteria or at a location of the team’s choosing. Something not to be missed at the banquets are the speeches. Most speeches are usually a look back at what all happened that season, such as the wins, losses, highlights and memories that will forever be kept by both the teammates and coaches. During these speeches, the coaches express how truly fond they are of their players by letting them know how proud they have made them over the past seasons. Junior Brittany Mavrich’s favorite memory from the girls’ soccer banquet is when the coach, John Morbacher, rapped about the team. “He just raps about us, like things we did over the season, kind of like an overview. He says something about each person on the team,” Mavrich said. Sometimes the seniors on the team also choose to make a speech of their own. This year at the volleyball banquet, Senior Carolyn Jenny gave a speech about the team in a style similar to the infamous, “to be honest” posts on Facebook. Although the coaches’ final speeches are important and not to be missed, there are other things that happen. The banquets are usually catered. Letters are also given out to those athletes who earned them playing in the games that were held throughout the season.
