House of Night Series

What’s a recent book I’ve read? Maybe more like a series, called “The House of Night” series. The first book, called “Marked,” is about a normal 16-year-old girl named Zoey Montgomery from Tulsa, Ok. However, she ends up being marked by a vampyre, and has to go to the House of Night school for vampyre young, or fledglings, only. The adjustment is hard, especially when her mother and step-loser, as she calls him, tell her that she will go to hell and then cut off communication with her. Only her grandmother, Sylvia Redbird helps her through everything. Upon arriving to the school, Zoey has a vision from her Goddess Nyx, telling Zoey that she was marked for a bigger reason than just changing schools. The high priestess, Nefert, becomes Zoey’s mentor, and all seems to go well. But in the second book, Zoey’s roommate dies. Through a strange twist of events, her roommate and other fledglings that died have been brought back from the dead. Nefert then becomes evil, bringing back an immortal angel, the white bull, and trying to start an all-out war against humans. This series is thrilling. I never thought I would get into it so much, or find so many similarities between Zoey and me. I’m not one for books on vampyres, especially after the disaster called the “Twilight Saga,” and when I first was handed “Marked,” that’s exactly what I thought it would be. The truth is, this series actually makes sense. The goddess Nyx is a real goddess of the Wiccan religion. She is the goddess of night, and since vampyres only come out during the nighttime, it makes logical sense she’d be the main goddess for them. The affinities for the elements air, fire, water, earth and spirit that are so crucial for Zoey and her friends, are the five elements of the Wiccan religion as well. Then, Zoey and her grandmother are Cherokee Indian, so this immortal angel that was brought up from the ground is an actual legend of the Cherokee Indians. He was an angel that walked the earth, hated humans, raped the women, enslaved the men, and his children are horrible demons that are ravens with the arms and legs of humans. These books sucked me in very quickly, and surprised me on how realistic it seems, especially for me when I truly believe in old legends and am open to the Wiccan religion. The authors currently aren’t done writing the series yet; a new one came out just in November and this coming November another will be coming out. So far I think there are close to 10 books, but they are an easy read, and it is based on a lot of facts and legends. I highly recommend these books.
