Indoor Track

On Saturday mornings, the indoor track team disembarks on a long journey to Edinboro University for multi-school meets. Unlike most winter sport events, the indoor track team travels much farther than other teams to compete. Leaving from Freedom, the journey from the high school to Edinboro University is two hours one way. Once the team arrives at Edinboro University, they will spend the rest of the day there. The day usually lasts from 10 a.m. until their departure at 8 p.m. While they’re there, the team spends the majority of the time waiting around to compete in the events in which they are entered. Freedom students who are part of the indoor track team partake in pole vaulting, hurdles, distance running, sprinting and jumping. “The bonding experiences are great. We spend a lot of time with each other, considering you spend the entire time there,” Junior Jake Deweese said. While waiting, the team passes time by watching races, playing hacky-sack and completing homework. Freshman Kayleigh Roberts, a first-year member of the indoor track team, likes to watch pole vaulting along with the other events going on at the meets. When it’s time for her event, Roberts said that she talks to people at the starting line. Although there is a large number of schools that attend the meet at Edinboro University, there are always events going on at the same time. Due to the large number of participants within in a certain event, different heats are necessary so a final championship race can be determined.
