Mohawks and victory: Baseball team gets haircuts and makes it to playoffs

Players are proud and hopes are high as the boys’ baseball team proves that they are a force within their section. After defeating Bishop Canevin on May 9, the team advanced into the playoffs, finishing the regular season with a section record of 10-4 and an 11-5 record overall. “I think we’re actually in the toughest section,” said Senior Eddie Angeline, making the success even more gratifying; the team faced, and defeated, competitors that they hadn’t played in previous years. “We’re a lot better than everybody expected us to be,” said JV player Colin Macon. Junior Riley Schwertz agreed. “Nobody thought we would do this well,” he said. “I’m overly satisfied.” The team’s effort has not gone unnoticed, either. There have been multiple attempts to make a group bus for students who wanted to cheer the team on at away games. “I was surprised even the 15 or so students signed up,” Schwertz said. Not only is the team’s record gaining attention, but so are many of the players’ recent haircuts. This playoff tradition has left the many of the guys with not just shaved heads, but blue mohawks. “We had thought of doing the blue Avatar arrow if we made playoffs,” said senior Matt Casto. “One day at practice we decided to just do mohawks, but since we already had the blue dye for the arrow, we dyed them blue.” Unfortunately they have not yet been able to show off these new cuts; attempts to play a first playoff game against Riverside have been repeatedly canceled due to rain. The team must win in order to advance further in the playoffs, but many players said that they are optimistic. “I feel pretty good about it; we’re doing great,” said Junior Jordan Price.
