Ms. Fontaine

Steelers and Pirates fans are sure to get along with one of the many additions to Freedom’s faculty this year, Ms. Jessika Fontaine. Ms. Fontaine, a new member of Freedom’s Special Education Department, said that she enjoys attending Pittsburgh sports games. She teaches two Science classes here, while also providing student support in multiple inclusion classes; these allow her to provide additional assistance to students in other teachers’ classrooms. What is personally exciting though, Ms. Fontaine said, is that this teaching position at Freedom is actually her very first job. “This is it!” she said and laughed. This 2005 Blackhawk graduate spent a total of five years in college, majoring in elementary and special education; she first attended two years at Penn State, followed by three more years at Slippery Rock University where she received her Bachelor’s degree. She graduated from Slippery Rock just this past May, and quickly transitioned into a member of the Freedom family. Ms. Fontaine has always been inclined toward special education, but what she likes about this position is the ability to work with teenagers; it allows her to more easily relate to her students. However, “trying to get to know all of the students and trying to meet everybody” poses a slight challenge, just as it would with any teacher new to a school district. Overall though, Ms. Fontaine said she enjoys teaching here. “My time so far here is pretty great; I like it a lot,” she said. So what types of things does Ms. Fontaine like to do outside of school? Family and friends are a major part of her life, and she likes to take time to watch her younger brother, who is 10 years younger than her, play baseball. “I’m very family-oriented,” Ms. Fontaine said.
