Rough Beginnings, Smooth Endings

Despite having a rough start to this season, the baseball team is working hard to make it to the playoffs. At the beginning of the season, the boys had to share the gym with the softball team, which left practices on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays. Along with the games, now the athletes have practices every day. To celebrate all of the hard work done in a game, Junior Aaron McSorley said “some of the teammates go out to a team dinner.” As of April 9, the team has had three section and two non-section games. The difference between the two is that section games count towards the playoffs. To reach the goal of playoffs, the team needs to be in the top three ranking for the section. According to McSorley, the team seems to be better at batting than previous years. Their new Assistant Coach Christopher Coennen has helped a lot this year, and he has overall helped everyone on the team. “We have freshmen that are playing, and that’s good because it gets them in and playing longer. We also have a great senior class who’s always willing to help the younger players if they need anything,” McSorley said. Junior Mark Zurick is proud to be on the baseball team. “Whenever people make fun of Freedom sports, I can say that the baseball team has made playoffs four straight years,” Zurick said. The team has a lot more chemistry than they did in the past few years. Zurick said that it “helps with our communication on the field.” Senior Colin Macon said that the team “has a lot of fun.” But where there is time for joking around, there is time for seriousness. In order to go deep into the season, the whole team needs to be dedicated, stay focused and be healthy. Zurick said that this won’t be a problem because the team is already dedicated.
